Making a Large Wooden Jewelry Box with Cocobolo
You can make a beautiful large wooden jewelry box with a single wood or combine it with other types of wood. If you don’t have a big budget, you can go with a commonly available local wood and if money is not a constraint, you could go for an exotic and very rare wood like the Cocobolo. The cocobolo is a very rare find as it has been exploited thoroughly.
Cocobolo grows mainly in Central America and is a tropical hardwood that is essentially a dense rosewood tree. It is a part of the ‘Dalbergia’ species and has several other names like the Mexican Rosewood, Cocobolo Rosewood, and Granadillo. When it is cut, you will see various patterns in the wood. Even a single board could reveal two different patterns on either side of the board. This makes the wood very attractive for making jewelry boxes.
The Cocobolo exhibits some intensely vibrant colors ranging from orange to dark purple with deep black lines. In time the color will darken considerably and can even turn into a very deep purple or a rich thick brownish red. Parallel lines, Eyelike, full curls, etc are some of the patterns you can expect to see on this wood.
It has a very strong odor and feels oily to the touch. It can be easily machined although it is a very hard, solid, and dense wood. Interestingly, when you strike a log of Cocobolo, it will strike a clear musical note!A clear musical tone can be heard when you strike the Cocobolo!
The hardwood is mostly used but at times blending the almost white sapwood with the extremely dark hardwood can produce some interesting results.
The wood is naturally water resistant so prevents the absorption of liquids and it is also naturally resistant to insects, diseases and decay.
As there is not enough of this wood available commercially, it is extremely rare to find Cocobolo veneers. The 8/4 cocobolo turning squares are the ones that are comparatively easy to get.
Being a beautiful wood does not necessarily mean the Cocobolo is a safe wood to work with. It can cause bad allergic reactions to skin and eyes, and even when inhaled, and it could also stain your hands with prolonged use.
